About Dental Implants
Dental Implants are tiny titanium posts surgically implanted into the jaw. Implants come in the form of crowns to replace one tooth, bridges or partials to replace several teeth, or dentures to replace an upper and/or lower arch of teeth. If you opt for implant dentures, they can be fixed or removable. Four to six implants give removable implant dentures snug fit, so there is no slipping, wobbling, or looseness. All dental implants, feel, and function like natural, healthy teeth. You’ll talk, eat, and smile in public with new confidence, after implants.
Are You A Candidate For This Treatment?
The first step in getting implants is to call our Toronto, Ontario dental office and schedule a consultation. The doctor will examine your teeth and explain your options, answering any questions you may have. You’ll need healthy bone density in your jaw, as well as good gum health, prior to becoming an implant candidate. If necessary, you can undergo a bone graft, sinus lift, or periodontal therapy to improve your potential for becoming an implant patient.
If you and the dentist determine that implants would be a good fit for your case, treatment planning will commence. We will take x-rays, photographs, and perform any necessary extractions. You and the doctor will discuss your health and dental history, and review a list of your current medications. All of the information we collect will go into creating a custom treatment plan based on your individual needs.
Implant placement is a day surgery. When you arrive, we will make you comfortable and administer sedation and/or anesthetic, depending upon your treatment plan. The oral surgeon or periodontist will then secure the small, titanium dental implant posts into your jawbone, in the ideal position for optimal durability and longevity. Expect three to six months for complete osseointegration, when your jaw will integrate with the posts to anchor them securely in place. During this phase, you will probably wear a temporary crown, bridge, or denture so that you can continue with your life normally. Be sure to follow your postoperative instructions to promote proper and prompt healing.
After the implant sites have healed, the doctor will attach a small connector, called an abutment, to each post head. Then, your crown, bridge, partial, or denture will be fitted onto the abutment. You’ll leave the restoration appointment with your beautiful, strong, new smile intact – and your self-confidence renewed. Expect to eat whatever you like, without worrying about your teeth. You’ll likely experience improved quality of life, as well.
Caring for implants is not much different from caring for natural teeth. Brush for two minutes, twice a day, and floss at least once a day. Attend regular dental checkups as often as advised, so we can monitor your implants and keep your mouth healthy.
