Insurance Benefits – Use Them Or Lose Them – They Expire Each Year
If you are fortunate enough to have dental benefits through your employer, you may or may not be aware that your benefits have an annual expiration date. While this isn’t true for every benefit plan, it is true for most of the over 100,000 benefit plans in Ontario. Many insurance companies structure their benefit plan on a yearly basis, which means if you don’t use your benefits before December 31, you’ll lose them for this year.
Since your benefits are a part of your salary, you wouldn’t want to waste your hard earned money. That’s why it’s a good idea to have a look at your dental insurance benefit summary, and refresh your memory on what you have coverage for and what you need to budget for. Then, be sure to schedule all your medical, dental and extended health care visits, appointments and prescription refills before your benefits expire this year.
If you’re having trouble deciphering exactly what your dental insurance plan covers, please ask us- we’re happy to help review your plan or send an estimate to your insurer for you. The plan explanations can be confusing, but we are well versed in the lingo.
Dental health is linked to overall health and well-being, so it makes sense to ensure that your teeth and gums are examined by dental professionals regularly. If you have insurance benefits that will pay for your dental treatment, that is definitely helpful. Dental treatment is never prescribed based on insurance coverage, but rather on your dental condition and needs. In some cases, the full cost of treatment is covered, and in other cases your required treatment may not be covered, or only partially covered. Your dentist will help you understand your treatment needs. Your dental administrators can help you understand your insurance benefits.
